Kitchen Remodel Electrical: Outlets, Circuits, and Code Requirements

A kitchen remodel almost always costs more on the electrical side than homeowners expect, because code requires more circuits and more protected outlets than most older kitchens have. Budget for electrical work to run somewhere between $3,000 and $9,000 on a full gut remodel, depending on panel capacity and how much drywall has to open up. This post walks through what the National Electrical Code, as adopted in Idaho, actually requires so you can plan and budget instead of getting surprised at inspection.
What you need
- At least two dedicated 20-amp small appliance circuits for countertop receptacles
- A dedicated circuit for the dishwasher, usually 15 or 20 amp depending on the unit's nameplate
- A dedicated circuit for the garbage disposal
- A dedicated circuit for the microwave, especially if it is a built-in or over-the-range unit
- GFCI protection on every countertop receptacle and any receptacle within 6 feet of a sink
- AFCI protection on kitchen lighting and general receptacle circuits (combination AFCI/GFCI breakers where both apply)
- A 240-volt circuit for the range or oven, sized to the appliance, commonly 40 or 50 amp
- Enough spare capacity in the main panel, or a subpanel if the existing panel is full
- Permit and inspection through the local building department (Bonner County or Kootenai County, or the city if your kitchen is inside city limits)
Step by step
- Map the countertop layout first. Code says no point along a countertop can be more than 24 inches from a receptacle, and any counter space 12 inches wide or wider needs its own outlet. Islands and peninsulas need at least one receptacle if they have counter space suitable for food prep. Draw the layout before anyone touches wiring, because cabinet and counter placement drives outlet count.
- Count your dedicated circuits. Dishwasher, disposal, microwave, and range each need their own circuit. In an older home this alone can mean adding four or five new breaker spaces. If the panel is already full, that's a separate conversation about a subpanel or panel upgrade before cabinets go in.
- Plan the small appliance circuits. Two 20-amp circuits minimum, feeding only countertop receptacles, no lighting or other rooms mixed in. These handle toasters, coffee makers, and other high-draw small appliances without tripping breakers during normal use.
- Rough in before drywall closes up. This is when boxes get set, wire gets pulled, and the electrician confirms spacing meets code. Once drywall and cabinets go in, moving a box means cutting into finished work, so this step needs to be right the first time.
- Schedule rough-in and final inspection. Both Bonner and Kootenai counties require permits for kitchen electrical work that involves new circuits or moved wiring. Inspectors check GFCI and AFCI protection, receptacle spacing, and circuit dedication before you close the walls and again before final sign-off.
Where this goes wrong
The most common mistake is treating the kitchen remodel as a cosmetic project and leaving the old wiring alone. A 1980s or 1990s kitchen typically has one or two circuits for the whole counter, no GFCI protection, and no dedicated circuit for the dishwasher or microwave. If you install new cabinets and countertops without upgrading the wiring behind them, you fail inspection, or worse, nobody catches it and you end up with an overloaded circuit tripping every time the microwave and coffee maker run together.
Another failure mode is underestimating panel capacity. Adding four new dedicated circuits plus GFCI and AFCI breakers can push an older 100-amp panel past what it can safely handle, especially if the home also has electric heat or a well pump. Homeowners sometimes find this out mid-project when the electrician says the panel needs to be upgraded to 150 or 200 amp, which adds cost nobody planned for.
Receptacle spacing gets missed too. Contractors sometimes place outlets based on where cabinets look good rather than measuring the 24-inch rule along the counter. This is an easy fix during rough-in and an expensive one after tile and backsplash go up.
Mixing lighting and receptacle circuits is another common shortcut. Code wants small appliance circuits dedicated to countertop receptacles only. Running kitchen lighting off the same circuit as the toaster and blender is a fast way to trip breakers and fail inspection.
Finally, skipping the permit entirely is a real risk in a remodel. Unpermitted electrical work can complicate a home sale later, since a buyer's inspector or appraiser may flag it, and insurance claims involving unpermitted wiring can get denied.
When to stop and call someone
Basic cosmetic work, like swapping outlet covers or replacing a light fixture on an existing circuit, is reasonable for a handy homeowner. Anything involving new circuits, moving the panel, adding a subpanel, or running wire through walls and behind cabinets is a licensed electrician's job. Idaho requires a licensed electrical contractor for this kind of work, and the permit has to be pulled by someone licensed in most cases.
If your panel is more than 20 years old, if you're not sure how many amps are free, or if your kitchen currently has ungrounded two-prong outlets, get an electrician to look at the whole picture before you order cabinets. It's a lot cheaper to find out you need a panel upgrade during planning than during rough-in, when your contractor is standing in the kitchen waiting on power to finish the job.
