Preparing Your North Idaho Home's Electrical System for Winter Outages

What the problem actually looks like

A breaker panel with a burning smell that nobody investigated because it only happens once in a while. An outdoor outlet cover that's cracked and lets water in every time it rains, and then freezes. A portable generator that gets wheeled out once a year and plugged straight into a wall outlet with a makeshift cord, because the homeowner was never shown a proper transfer switch setup.
On cabins and second homes, the pattern is different. Nobody's there to notice anything until the pipes have frozen because the sump pump or heat tape lost power for three days and nobody knew.
Why it happens
North Idaho winters put real mechanical stress on electrical systems. Ice buildup on power lines and tree limbs is the single biggest cause of outages in Bonner and Kootenai counties. A quarter inch of ice on a mile of line adds a surprising amount of weight, and combined with wind, that's enough to snap branches onto service drops or pull a connection loose at the house.
Inside the house, cold makes existing weak points worse. A loose neutral connection or a breaker that was already running warm will act up faster in cold, damp conditions because the metal contracts and connections that were marginal in summer become intermittent in winter. Outdoor receptacles and boxes that aren't rated for wet locations let moisture in, and that moisture freezes, expands, and cracks housings or corrodes contacts.
Generators cause a different kind of trouble. Without a proper transfer switch or interlock, people backfeed power into the house wiring, which can send electricity out onto the utility lines and put repair crews at serious risk, on top of the fire and shock hazard inside the home.

A pre-winter electrical check doesn't need to be complicated, but it should be thorough. Here's what we actually walk through on a service call like this:
- Open the panel and look for discoloration, rust, or a burning smell. Any of these means a connection is loose or overheating and needs attention before it's a bigger problem.
- Test every GFCI and AFCI breaker or outlet. Cold weather is exactly when you don't want one of these failing silently.
- Check the service entrance and meter base for loose connections, cracked insulation, or signs a squirrel or woodpecker has been at the wiring, which is more common in rural areas than people expect.
- Inspect outdoor outlet covers and boxes. In-use covers rated for wet locations are worth the small upgrade cost if what's out there now is cracked or missing.
- Look at tree limbs near the service drop and the main line to the house. We don't trim utility-side lines, that's Avista or Kootenai Electric's job, but limbs close to your own service drop are fair game and worth cutting back before ice season.
- If there's a portable generator, make sure it's connected through a properly installed transfer switch or interlock kit, not a cord run through a window or backfed into an outlet.
- Confirm sump pumps, well pumps, and any freeze-protection heat tape are on circuits that make sense, and consider whether they need to be on the generator's backup circuits at all.
- Label the panel clearly. In an outage at night, in the cold, a labeled panel saves real time.
A basic inspection like this usually runs somewhere in the range of a couple hundred dollars for a straightforward single panel, more if there's troubleshooting involved or if a transfer switch needs to be installed, which is typically a bigger job running into four figures depending on panel size and generator setup. Costs vary enough by house and by what we find that we'd rather look at the specific panel and service than quote a number blind.
What it costs to ignore
The cheap version of this list is doing nothing, and most years that works out fine. The expensive version shows up when it doesn't. A backfed generator can electrocute a lineworker or start a fire in the panel, and that's not a hypothetical, it's the reason utilities and electricians push transfer switches so hard. A frozen, cracked outdoor box can lead to a short that trips a breaker over and over until someone ignores the tripping and resets it one too many times.
On the more mundane end, a sump pump that loses power during a three-day outage means a flooded crawlspace, and frozen pipes from a lost heat source or heat tape can mean thousands of dollars in plumbing repair and drywall work, which dwarfs the cost of a pre-winter check. Spoiled food and damaged electronics from repeated outages add up too, though that's a smaller concern than the safety issues above.
