How to Reset a Tripped Breaker (and When It Means a Bigger Problem)
A tripped breaker is usually a five-minute fix. Find the panel, find the breaker that's sitting in the middle position instead of fully on or off, flip it firmly to off, then back to on. If it trips again right away, stop and read the second half of this post before you flip it a third time.
How to Reset a Breaker Safely
Most homes in Bonner and Kootenai counties have a main panel in the garage, basement, or a utility closet, and sometimes a subpanel out at a shop or detached garage. Here's the process:
- Unplug or turn off whatever was running when the power went out. If it was a space heater, hair dryer, or table saw, leave it unplugged for now.
- Open the panel door and look for the breaker that isn't lined up with the others. Tripped breakers often sit in a middle position, not fully off.
- Push that breaker firmly to the OFF position first. You should feel and hear a click.
- Push it back to ON.
- Plug things back in one at a time, not all at once, so you're not asking the circuit to handle a big load right away.
If the breaker holds, you're done. If it trips again within a few seconds, don't force it back on repeatedly. That's the panel telling you something real is wrong, and resetting it over and over can wear the breaker itself or mask a wiring problem.
What Kind of Trip You're Dealing With
Not all trips mean the same thing:
- Overload trip: You had too much running on one circuit. A 15-amp circuit is rated for about 1,800 watts, a 20-amp for around 2,400 watts. Space heaters, hair dryers, and shop tools pull a lot of that on their own. Add a couple more devices and you're over the limit. This is the most common and least worrying cause.
- Short circuit: A hot wire touching a neutral or ground wire directly. This trips the breaker instantly and hard, often with a noticeable snap. It won't reset and stay on.
- Ground fault: Electricity is leaking to a ground path it shouldn't be on, often through moisture, a damaged appliance cord, or a failing fixture. GFCI outlets and breakers are designed to catch this before it becomes a shock hazard.
- Arc fault: AFCI breakers, required in most bedroom and living space circuits under current code, trip when they detect the electrical signature of arcing, which can happen with damaged wiring, loose connections, or a nail through a cable in the wall.
When It's Just an Overload
If the same breaker trips only when you're running a space heater and a microwave on the same circuit, that's a load problem, not a wiring problem. Spread things out across circuits, or if you're running heaters through a North Idaho winter, consider having a dedicated 20-amp circuit added for that room. It's a relatively small job and it solves the problem for good instead of you resetting a breaker every cold morning.
When It Means a Bigger Problem
Pay attention to these patterns:
- The same breaker trips repeatedly, even with nothing new plugged in.
- The breaker feels hot to the touch or the panel smells like burning plastic.
- You see scorch marks or melted plastic around the breaker or outlet.
- A breaker won't stay reset at all, tripping the instant you flip it.
- Lights flicker or dim across the house right before or after a trip.
- The panel buzzes or hums.
Any of these point to a wiring fault, a failing breaker, or a loose connection inside the panel, not just too many things plugged in. Loose connections are common in older homes and cabins where the panel hasn't been serviced in 20 or 30 years, and they get worse over time because loose wires arc, and arcing generates heat, and heat makes connections looser.
North Idaho Specific Wrinkles
Cabin and second-home owners around Priest Lake, Sandpoint, and Lake Pend Oreille deal with a few things full-time residents don't. Panels sit unused for weeks at a time, moisture gets in during freeze-thaw cycles, and rodents find their way into crawlspaces and chew wire insulation. If you open up the cabin for the season and a breaker trips right away, don't assume it's just dust. Rodent damage to wiring is common enough in this region that it's worth a real inspection, not just a reset.
Well pump circuits are another one to watch. A pump that trips its breaker on startup, especially in cold weather, can mean the pump motor is struggling or the breaker itself has weakened with age.
When to Call Someone
If a breaker trips once and stays on, you're fine. If it's a repeat offender, if you smell anything burning, or if you're not sure which category you're in, that's when it's worth having someone look at the panel directly instead of guessing.
