What to Do After a Storm Damages Your Home's Electrical System

A wind storm rolls through Sagle or Sandpoint, a tree limb comes down across the service line, and now half the house is dark and you're standing in the yard trying to figure out if it's safe to go back inside. That's the situation this post is written for. Storm damage to a home's electrical system usually falls into a few predictable patterns, and knowing which one you're looking at tells you whether you can wait for daylight or need to call someone tonight.

What the problem actually looks like

The obvious case is a downed line, a leaning weatherhead, or a service mast pulled away from the house after a tree or branch hit it. If the wire is on the ground or hanging low, that's a job for the power company and the fire department, not a homeowner with a flashlight.

Less obvious signs show up inside. Lights that flicker or dim when the storm hits and stay that way after. Outlets that used to work and now don't, especially ones on an exterior wall near where a tree fell. A burning smell near the panel or a specific outlet. A breaker that trips the moment you reset it. Water intrusion around light fixtures, ceiling fans, or the meter base after heavy rain or a roof leak caused by storm damage. On well systems, a pump that suddenly won't run even though power seems fine elsewhere in the house.

Surge damage is quieter. Nothing looks wrong from across the room, but a few days after the storm you notice the garage door opener won't work, the microwave display is dead, or a smart thermostat has gone blank. That's consistent with a voltage spike from a lightning strike or a grid fault during the storm, even if the strike wasn't on your property.

Why it happens

Most storm electrical damage in this region traces back to trees and wind, not lightning directly. Bonner and Kootenai counties have a lot of tall timber close to houses and power lines, and a wet, wind-loaded tree only needs one gust to come down. When a limb hits a service drop or the mast on the house, it can pull the weatherhead loose, crack the meter base, or yank wiring inside the wall where the mast attaches. Call the utility to report it. If the meter base or mast is visibly pulled away from the house, the power company usually won't reconnect until an electrician repairs the mast and the connection passes inspection.

What it costs to ignore

A tripped breaker that keeps getting reset without diagnosis is the most common thing that turns a cheap fix into an expensive one. If the underlying fault is a chafed wire or a failing connection, repeated resets keep feeding current into a bad spot, and that's how attic or wall fires start. Storm-related fires from damaged wiring aren't common, but they follow a pattern of ignored warning signs, not sudden surprises.

Ignoring water intrusion is the second-most costly mistake. A fixture or outlet that got wet during the storm and seems to work fine afterward can corrode internally over weeks or months, leading to an intermittent short that's much harder to trace once the original cause is dry and forgotten. Catching it right after the storm, while you know exactly which fixture got hit, is a lot cheaper than chasing it down in January.

Surge damage to a specific appliance is usually a replace-it-or-not decision, not a safety issue, unless the appliance is hardwired. But an undetected surge that partially damaged a breaker or panel component can cause nuisance tripping or overheating months later. If your panel has visibly aged wiring, or you know a strike happened nearby, it's worth having someone check the panel even if everything currently seems to work.

If the outage was just the utility grid going down and your house wasn't physically damaged, yes, power restoration is automatic and there's nothing to do. If a breaker tripped, you can reset it once. If it trips again immediately, stop and call an electrician rather than resetting repeatedly.

How do I know if it's a utility problem or something on my side?

If neighbors' lights are also out, it's the utility. If your neighbors have power and you don't, or only part of your house lost power while the rest works, the problem is on your side of the meter and it's an electrical contractor's job, not the utility's.
