Rodents and Rural Wiring: Protecting Your Home from Chewed Wires

If you're finding scratching sounds in the attic, a breaker that trips for no clear reason, or actual bite marks on wire insulation in a crawlspace or cabin, you're probably dealing with rodents in your wiring. This is one of the most common electrical problems on rural and wooded properties in Bonner and Kootenai counties, especially in cabins, seasonal homes, and outbuildings that sit closed up for weeks or months at a time.

Most likely cause

Mice and rats chew wire insulation because they need to gnaw to keep their teeth worn down, and because wire bundles make convenient nesting material and travel routes. Attics, crawlspaces, and wall cavities near the service panel are the usual spots. In a cabin or second home that sits vacant part of the year, rodents move in undisturbed and can do a lot of damage before anyone notices.

If you see bare copper anywhere, treat it as urgent. Exposed wire in an attic or wall cavity is a real fire risk, not just a nuisance.

Less common causes

Rodents aren't the only explanation for these symptoms, and it's worth ruling out a few other things before you assume that's what's going on.

Squirrels or larger animals in the attic. Squirrels chew wire too, but they usually leave larger nesting material, bigger droppings, and you'll often hear movement during the day rather than at night. Check attic insulation for disturbed areas and larger entry gaps around the roofline or soffit.

Loose connections mimicking rodent damage. A breaker that trips on its own, or lights that flicker, can also come from a loose neutral, a failing breaker, or a bad connection at a junction box, none of which involve any chewing at all. Confirm by checking for a warm cover plate, a breaker that feels loose in the panel, or scorch marks at a connection point. If there's no bite mark and no bare copper, look at connections before blaming rodents.

Old wire insulation failing on its own. Older cloth or rubber-insulated wire, or wire that's been exposed to attic heat for decades, can crack and crumble without any animal involved. This looks different from a bite mark: it's usually flaking or brittle insulation along the whole length of a run, not a chewed-through gap in one spot. This is common in homes built before the 1970s that haven't had wiring updated.

How to fix it

Once you've confirmed rodent damage, the fix has two parts: deal with the animals, and deal with the wire.

  1. Cut power to the affected circuit at the panel before touching any exposed or suspect wiring.
  2. Inspect the full run, not just the visible chew mark. Rodents rarely stop at one spot. Follow the wire back through the attic or crawlspace to check for other damaged sections.
  3. Replace any damaged segment rather than taping over it. Electrical tape is not a permanent repair on a chewed wire. A proper repair splices in new wire with a rated junction box, not tape and a hope.
  4. Seal entry points. Look for gaps around foundation vents, utility penetrations, roof eaves, and where pipes or conduit enter the house. Steel wool, hardware cloth, or expanding foam with a metal mesh backing works better than foam alone, since rodents can chew through plain foam.
  5. Set traps or work with a pest control service to reduce the population before you spend money on repairs, otherwise you're fixing the same damage twice.
  6. Consider rodent-resistant conduit or sleeving for wiring in attics, crawlspaces, and outbuildings that see recurring rodent pressure. Metal conduit or rodent-proof cable sleeves cost more upfront but hold up where plastic conduit and open wire runs don't.
  7. Have an electrician check the whole circuit with a continuity or insulation resistance test if there's any doubt about hidden damage further along the run. Chewed insulation that hasn't fully broken through can still fail later.

Costs vary a lot depending on how much wire needs replacing and how accessible it is. A single damaged section in an open attic is a relatively small repair. Extensive damage across multiple circuits, or wire buried in finished walls, costs more because of the labor to access it, not the wire itself. As a general range, straightforward repairs to accessible wiring often run in the low hundreds of dollars, while repairs involving wall or ceiling access, multiple circuits, or panel work can run well into four figures. These are rough ranges, and any electrician should be able to give you a firmer number after seeing the damage.

When it is not worth fixing

Sometimes patching chewed sections isn't the smart move. If a cabin or outbuilding has old wiring that's already marginal, layering rodent repairs onto it just delays a bigger decision. Signs it's time to talk about a fuller rewire instead of a patch:

In those cases, spending money on a patch that might get chewed again in a year or two doesn't make sense. A full or partial rewire costs more up front but solves the underlying problem instead of chasing it room by room.
