EV Charger Installation Costs: Level 1 vs Level 2 Explained

Level 1 charging uses a regular household outlet and costs little to nothing to set up, but it adds range slowly, often 3-5 miles per hour. Level 2 charging needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit, typically costs $800 to $2,500 to install, and adds 20-40 miles of range per hour. For most homeowners in Bonner and Kootenai counties who drive an EV daily, Level 2 is worth the upfront cost. For a cabin used a few weekends a month, Level 1 might be all you need.

Step by step

  1. Figure out your actual charging need. If you drive under 40 miles a day and can charge overnight, Level 1 may cover it. If you drive more, arrive home low, or need a full charge in a few hours, you need Level 2.
  2. Check your panel. An electrician looks at your main panel's total capacity and what's already drawing from it. Older 100-amp panels in some Sagle and Sandpoint homes are already near capacity with electric heat or a well pump, and may need an upgrade before adding a 240V EV circuit.
  3. Decide plug-in vs hardwired. A NEMA 14-50 outlet with a portable Level 2 charger is more flexible and often a bit cheaper. A hardwired unit is more permanent and sometimes required for higher amperage chargers or for certain rebate programs.
  4. Pull a permit and schedule inspection. This isn't optional for a 240V circuit. It protects you if there's ever a fire, an insurance claim, or a home sale, since unpermitted electrical work can come up in inspections.

Where this goes wrong

The most common problem is undersizing the wire for the distance. A run from the panel to a detached garage or shop, which is common on rural Bonner County lots, needs larger gauge wire than a short run to an attached garage. Using the wrong gauge causes voltage drop, which means slower charging and a warm cable, sometimes hot enough to be a fire risk.

Another frequent issue is assuming the panel has room when it doesn't. Adding a 240V, 40-60 amp circuit to a panel that's already loaded can trip the main breaker repeatedly or, worse, get installed by someone who skips the load calculation entirely. That's how you end up with a panel running hotter than it should under load.

Outdoor installations in our climate get skipped over on weatherproofing more than people expect. A charger or outlet rated for indoor use only, mounted on an exterior wall, will corrode or let moisture in over a winter or two. Cold also affects charger performance itself, some Level 2 units slow down output below a certain temperature, which matters for anyone charging outside through a North Idaho winter.

People also try to stretch a Level 1 setup with an extension cord to reach the car. This is a real fire hazard. EV charging draws a steady, high current for hours at a time, which is very different from a vacuum cleaner or power tool. Extension cords and multi-outlet adapters aren't rated for that kind of sustained load and can overheat.

Last one: skipping the permit. Some installers will offer to do the work without pulling one, usually to save time or money. If something goes wrong later, an insurance company can deny a claim tied to unpermitted electrical work, and it becomes a disclosure issue when selling the house.

When to stop and call someone

Anything involving your main panel, a subpanel, or a new circuit over 20 amps should go to a licensed electrician. That covers essentially all Level 2 installations. If your panel is already full or older than 20-25 years, or if you're running power to a detached garage or shop, that's a job for someone who can do a proper load calculation and pull permits.

DIY is reasonable for Level 1 if you already have a dedicated, code-compliant 120V outlet in good condition near your parking spot and you're just plugging in the charging cable that came with your car. Don't attempt the wiring yourself if you're not already comfortable working inside a panel, that's where the real risk is.
