Aluminum Wiring in Older Homes: Risks and Repair Options

You bought a house built sometime between 1965 and 1975, or you've owned one for years, and someone mentioned it might have aluminum wiring. Maybe an inspector flagged it. Maybe you noticed a warm cover plate on a switch, a faint burning smell near an outlet, or a light that flickers when you jiggle the plug. You want to know: is this actually dangerous, and do you have to rip out all the walls to fix it?
Short answer: aluminum wiring itself is not the danger. The connections are. Aluminum branch circuit wiring, common in homes built roughly 1965 to 1973, expands and contracts more than copper when it heats and cools. Over years, that movement loosens the connection at outlets, switches, and light fixtures. A loose connection means resistance, resistance means heat, and heat at a wire nut inside a wall is how house fires start. The wire running through your walls is fine. The place it meets a device is where trouble builds.
Most likely cause
If your home was built in that late-60s to early-70s window and you're seeing warm switch plates, flickering lights that aren't tied to a dimmer, or a burnt-plastic smell near an outlet, the most likely explanation is a loosening aluminum-to-device connection. This happens because most outlets and switches from that era were made for copper wire, and the metal alloys don't expand and contract the same way, so the screw terminal or backstab connection slowly works itself loose.
To confirm it's aluminum, look at the wire jacket where it enters the panel or an outlet box. It will usually say ALUMINUM or AL, or you'll see a dull silver-gray wire instead of copper's reddish-orange. Aluminum is also noticeably lighter and slightly more prone to nicking than copper when you handle it. If your panel was installed or the home built in that mid-60s to early-70s stretch, treat it as aluminum until you've confirmed otherwise, and get a licensed electrician to check the connections at a sample of outlets and switches. Warmth, discoloration, or a metallic smell at any single device is a reason to stop using that circuit until it's inspected, not a reason to wait and see.
Less common causes
Before assuming every symptom is aluminum-related, rule out a few other things that look similar.
- Copper wiring with a loose connection. Any wire, copper or aluminum, can develop a loose terminal from age, vibration, or a bad original installation. Confirm by checking the wire color at an outlet you can safely inspect. Copper looks copper. If it's copper and still warm, you likely have an isolated bad connection rather than a systemic aluminum issue.
- Overloaded circuit. A circuit running a space heater, window AC unit, and a few lamps can get warm from simple overload, regardless of wire type. Confirm by checking what's plugged into that circuit and whether the warmth or flicker only happens under heavy load.
- Failing dimmer or switch, unrelated to wire type. Cheap dimmers and old mechanical switches wear out and can run warm or flicker on their own. Confirm by swapping the switch or dimmer with a known-good one, or by testing whether the flicker follows the fixture or the switch.
How to fix it
If you've confirmed aluminum branch wiring with signs of connection trouble, here's the order most electricians work through:
- Stop using the affected circuit if you're seeing active warmth, smell, or scorching, until it's checked. This is a five-minute precaution, not a big ask.
- Have an electrician inspect and torque or repair the connections. Sometimes a loose screw terminal just needs to be reseated and tightened, though this is considered a temporary fix at best on aluminum, since the same loosening will happen again over time.
- COPALUM or AlumiConn connectors. These are the two repair methods recognized by most electrical codes and by CPSC guidance for aluminum wiring. COPALUM uses a special crimped copper connector and requires a licensed contractor with specific certified tooling, since the crimp tool is proprietary. AlumiConn uses a small screw-on connector block that joins the aluminum wire to a short copper pigtail, and it's more common now because it doesn't require special licensing, just correct installation. Either method is done at every single device on the circuit, not just the ones acting up, because the ones not acting up yet are on the same clock.
- Replace devices rated for aluminum, or pigtail with copper. Any outlet or switch marked CO/ALR is rated for direct aluminum connection. Many electricians prefer to pigtail aluminum wire to a short copper lead using AlumiConn connectors, then wire the device with copper, since this gets you off aluminum at every connection point without needing CO/ALR-rated devices everywhere.
- Check the panel too. Aluminum wiring often lands directly on breaker lugs not rated for it. An electrician can check torque and, where needed, add pigtail connections at the panel as well, not just at outlets.
Costs vary a lot depending on the number of devices and whether the panel needs work too. As a rough range, AlumiConn pigtailing across a typical home with 30 to 50 aluminum connections often runs into the low to mid thousands of dollars, while COPALUM repairs tend to cost more due to specialized labor. Get a walk-through and a written scope before assuming a number, since every house is wired a little differently.
When it is not worth fixing
Retrofitting connections with AlumiConn or COPALUM is the standard, code-recognized fix, and it's honest, durable work when done right. But there are cases where full rewiring makes more sense than repeated connection repairs.
If the home also has other outdated wiring problems, knob and tube in part of the house, undersized service, or a panel that's already due for replacement, doing connection repairs on the aluminum circuits alone can mean paying for two separate jobs over a few years instead of one larger job now. If you're planning a remodel that opens up walls anyway, that's close to the cheapest chance you'll get to rewire with copper throughout, since the labor to access the wiring is already being paid for by the remodel.
If you're buying the home and the inspection turns up aluminum wiring with no CO/ALR devices and no prior repairs, factor that into your offer. It's not a deal-breaker, but it's real work, typically more than a cosmetic fix and less than a full rewire, and it's worth having a licensed electrician quote it before you close, not after.
